Qualifications and Continuing Professional Development
I was moved to become a counsellor and psychotherapist more than thirty years ago, after my own Mother died suddenly,
and I found myself researching the experience of relatives who had experienced bereavement care in hospitals. From that time my
understanding and ability to treat the shock and trauma of sudden death has grown.
I now work with traumas experienced by people from all walks of life whose losses are born of a wide range of issues. I integrate EMDR (eye movement desensitisation reprogramming) and the Flash technique into my work as an effective way to relieve symptoms resulting from such events. I draw on all my knowledge and understanding to create a unique therapeutic relationship with each person, which enables them to speak freely and feel safe.
I regularly attend professional conferences and workshops to update my skills, deepen my understanding and increase my therapeutic skill. Continuing professional development is a requirement for all registered or accredited counsellors and psychotherapists (see below); I have also enjoyed the opportunity to reflect deeply on my work over years by belonging to two personal and professional development groups. One integrated mindfulness practice with gestalt experiments and bodywork. The other is ongoing, and in this group I experience a high level of support and a high level of challenge from colleagues who have an equivalent level of qualification. This is an opportunity to reflect on, explain and develop my understanding, emotional response to, and use of integrative psychotherapy.
I have a particular interest in healing the impact of acute and chronic trauma, using a range of skills according to the needs of the person or people in front of me. I attend a local group affiliated to EMDR North East for discussion of current issues and relevant research. I have a great belief in, and respect for, the power of attachment in relationships and am developing my practical skills in delivering attachment-focused EMDR.
I am registered with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I am an accredited member of EMDR Association UK & Ireland; also of the Interpersonal Psychotherapy Association (IPTA). All requirements are updated annually. You can also find me via Linked In.
I hold a current DBA Certificate enabling me to work with vulnerable adults.
